General Motors' Allison Transmission plant, a short ride northeast of Baltimore, is a state-of-the-art facility producing some of the newest and most advanced GM products in the world. With over a half million square feet, the plant produces a range of products, including the popular Allison A-1000 transmission for the Chevy Silverado and GMC Heavy Duty pickup truck lines, the new two-mode hybrid transmissions for the Chevy Tahoe, along with the gearbox for the hybrid Cadillac Escalade.
For years, the facility has been a leader in world class manufacturing. The facility is lean, clean, and visual. On this tour you will see a number of lean practices, including cellular design, visual management, mistake-proofing, and pull systems. Participants will also see the facility’s approach to effective people/machine integration and safety practices. The campus is powered in part by a 1.23 megawatt rooftop solar power system, owned and operated by Baltimore’s Constellation Energy Group and leased to GM under a 20-year service agreement.
The White Marsh facility has developed some of the best people practices across the GM organization. Employees are highly engaged in process improvement, and the plant enjoys leading performance as a direct result. GM Allison Transmission has been a local heavy manufacturing lean and green leader for many years. Come see why.
This tour is offered in conjunction with the Maryland World Class Consortia's 2013 Mid-Atlantic Lean Conference.
